Martin Kim’s Essay for his Jr. Black Belt in Pankration/MMA for Kids MMA Vancouver
For the past 6 or 7 years I think I have improved physically, mentally and spiritually through martial arts. I never really misbehaved at all when I was younger but I’ve seen how it’s helped other people with self-discipline issues in the past and it’s very effective. I know in the mental and spiritual aspect it has really helped me. I used to be very shy but I learned to have confidence and not to be nervous or shy anymore. Also physically in the past few years I have improved immensely. My cardio and strength have gotten better and even just getting thinner have improved my self-esteem and confidence. Not just the 3 main virtues but I’ve also learned self-defense and how to defend myself if I ever needed to. My techniques and awareness while I’m sparring have increased a lot too. I used to get mad at myself when I lost or was losing in tournaments or in the gym but now I’ve learned whether I win or lose that I gain experience from training to better improve myself and my opponents.
A few goals I have recently made for the future are to start to help out with instructing the classes because I like teaching other people to get experience teaching if I ever have to do something like that for a job. Another goal is to transition into adult classes in the next year because I like to challenge myself while training. If I just train with my peers or lower belts I won’t improve much but if I go with people bigger than me, then in tournaments if I have to verse someone my size or bigger there won’t be a problem. My two long term goal is to get my adult black belt and also to do ring fights either in Muay Thai or MMA depending on what I’m more comfortable with when I’m older. My main goal for right now is to do my best in not just the dojo but also school. I’m very lucky that my mom put me into martial arts at a young age because I have learned a lot from it and I have met most of my goals I’ve had since I started.
