For those of you who know me, my experience and my style, know that I have taught many people of different learning styles. This tournament represents some of the differences of how students learn and progress depending on their developmental stage. Speaking in generalities, everyone is different. As a teacher, I try to work with their learning style, maturation, motivation and inherent abilities. One thing, in my opinion, to keep in mind, for student, parent, and teacher is patience, perseverance, tolerance, and positivity. These attributes come to mind because they often facilitate success. As I always stress, and hope people will understand, particularly in our style, is to emphasize the experience, being in the moment with a zen-type quality to allow the expression of the spirit and technique, and to make progress, regardless of victory or defeat. Attitude is very important. Progress is the name of the game.

Competition, although not a requirement in the art for the development of Self-defense skills, Fitness, and Mental discipline, does, often, give a student something to look forward to and develop the spirit and technique to a higher level. I am very proud of the students at this tournament and I hope and expect, that everyone will continue to progress in the art and develop their full potential, whatever that may turn out to be, on the mat and in their personal development in life.
