Our weapons program utilizes modern and traditional methods. Traditionally the program utilizes techniques from Arnis, Escrima, Kali and the like. The style is Comtech based, Combat Technologies. The system is designed to be universal and transferable from weapon to weapon and to empty hand applications. This means that the methods are conceptual. The principles of impact weapons can be applied from one impact weapon to another and the principles from edged weapons can be transferred to other edged weapons.

The qualities that are developed from weapons training can be applied to a variety of self defense situations. The principle of attribute development is one of the key benefits of this class. Line familiarization, sensitivity, speed of various types, footwork, awareness, bi-lateral coordination are just a few of the attributes that can be enhanced from this class. These qualities can certainly enhance your overall progress in martial arts. Since a lot of the drills are complementary, a mutual benefit is developed. The drilling helps to develop automatic responses so that under stress the techniques will flow naturally. The concept of flow is a critical attribute that is developed through the practice of drilling. Although this type of drilling doesn’t allow for the same type of aggression and competitiveness that might be achieved in empty hand sparring in Muay Thai Kickboxing or MMA/ Mixed Martial Arts sparring, the flow benefits are certainly important. Also, to counteract that issue, there are some methods of sparring that can be used. For example there is some controlled knife sparring to develop sensitivity that can be done with control and practice knives, etc.

Overall, many of the concepts and techniques in the Weapons class can benefit the skills for Self Defense Vancouver for the students.
