Here are the results from the Can-Am International Martial Arts Championship on Saturday and Sunday May 26 and 27  ’18 from Posener’s Martial Arts Vancouver. I use the general term because this tournament has many different martial arts events. We had students compete in Sanshou on Saturday, which is basically a combination of Kickboxing and Wrestling, Submission Wrestling, which is synonymous with no gi brazilian jiu-jitsu, Kickboxing and MMA, which is also referred to as mixed martial arts, pankration and other terms.

In the Sanshou Saturday events, Olando Milford took the gold. Olando has been training for the last year at our branch location at Canada Scaffolding taught by Coach Chris Toews, who also teaches the Fight Fit Bootcamp class on Sundays and trains regularly at the main dojo. Nigel Chan re-injured his shoulder getting thrown off the mat, as I was told, and could not continue. I do remember the initial injury Nigel sustained getting thrown previously, which did require a fairly lengthy recovery time. We all wish Nigel well and a full and speedy recovery.

On Sunday we started out with the MMA competition. Tabby had a couple of fights and performed a couple of submissions with an armbar and entangled arm bar or choke. Adam also had a couple of fights and submitted his opponent with 2 kimuras from the north/south position. I put the touch gloves pic because the tournament was run well by Ryan C and he had consideration for safety, fairness and good spirit. Well done for him running the division for his first time, which can be challenging. I hope to see more people come out.

Linhh Thuy Diep competed in her first Kickboxing fight and did very well. She lost in the final match to a more polished fighter but gave it her all. Great work for going for it and challenging her self, her skill set and having a good experience. This well help in gaining confidence for next time.

Overall it was a well run event. In fact it was the 39th annual version of this event and I do remember the first couple of years of this occasion. Ken Low has always made strong efforts to put on solid events. Thank you to the awesome, committed, loyal instructor team who work with their skills and heart to deliver benefits to the students with the hope that the benefits will spread to others, George Kassimatis, Costa Rojas, Emilio Ditrocchio, Chris Toews, Hayden Francis,  Andrew De Leon, Adam Posener, Gus Rodgriquez, Julian Paul,  Ed Kumar, Marijana Slavnic, Paul Gibbons and the other assistant instructors. Thank you also the friends and family for their support. Looking forward to continuing passing on benefits of Posener’s Martial Arts Vancouver.

On April 21 ’18 Adam Posener and Ayden Arnold tested for the Junior Black Belt at Posener’s Pankration/ MMA Vancouver along with a number of other students and students testing for stripes.

The results are in. After approximately 8-9 years Adam Posener and Ayden Arnold will graduate the first course and receive their Junior Black Belt. I will talk about the JUNIOR BLACK belt more below. Also receiving their new belts are: Hunter Manness – Blue Belt, Stefano Lepore – Purple belt, Sharlie Young – Orange belt, Luca Siracusa – Orange belt, and Kiera Lajeunesse – Yellow belt. Advancing on stripes are Zola Mitchell, Luka Perez, James Wolf, Ronin Sharma, Arjun Sharma, Elijah De Leon, Tabitha Tam, Aryan Kalia, Artin Nazari, Rodean Nazari, and Ernesto Lepore.

I often joke a bit and describe the Junior black belt as not indicating acceptance into a ninja clan, admittance or passing the navy seal indoctrination, becoming a professional ufc or mma fighter or being a hired killer. It does signify some basic understanding of striking, wrestling and Jiu- jitsu and does indicate some level of proficiency for a junior. It does also indicate some basic understanding of the philosophy of the school, which is exemplified in the black belt oath and student qualification code. So it promotes some higher virtues, responsibility and an improved level of maturity. It does not equate with an adult black belt. The adult black belt incorporates a more advanced  curriculum and higher level, as would be expected. Adam and Ayden are both 13 years old.

The Junior black belt is an acknowledgement of where they have come from, the advancements they have made and promotes a new level of progress and growth, which is expected in the future. The goal is for them to have a greater understanding and positive expectations for their future development moving forward with confidence, gratitude, humility and some higher virtue.

We emphasize technical development in striking, wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu for the testing and the mma sparring is given special attention for the application of the techniques. Adam and Ayden sparred 5 mma rounds for their testing, satisfied the physical requirements and demonstrated their techniques to the best of their current ability. The concept being, naturally, that their skill levels will continue to improve to their highest level, as supported on the Junior black belt oath. The goal is to develop strongly the ‘no quit’ spirit, constant improvement with the Kaizen philosophical application, and physical, mental and spiritual development to their highest level, as the ideal.

Here is some information on our Submission Wrestling/ No Gi and MMA program:

Vancouver’s ultimate Submission Wrestling training for: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Self Defense, Fitness, Mental Discipline and Sport.

Our Submission Wrestling classes utilize techniques adapted from free-style wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu – BJJ Vancouver, “Catch-as-catch-can” (Folk American wrestling), Catch Wrestling, Shoot wrestling, Sambo, and Judo. These techniques are modified to be applicable for Pankration, MMA fighting (Mixed Martial Arts) and Submission wrestling as a sport. Our submission wrestling classes are a subsection of our Pankration curriculum.

It is the blending of our striking within the grappling context that makes our style unique and distinctive.
Whether it is the blending of striking and grappling to and from clinching, to take-downs, to ground fighting with submissions, our style is geared towards practicality.

Since our style and curriculum has a broad range of techniques, the individual student has the ability and potential to express their skills to the fullest degree.

Our classes provide an excellent physical workout developing muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardio vascular fitness and flexibility. In the process of training and getting in great shape, the student will be learning techniques that are useful for self-defence and sport.

Our classes are taught by experienced martial artists emphasizing discipline and respect with the aim of helping the student achieve their goals while enjoying the process and developing camaraderie. Many of the students and instructors have been successful using the school’s style in pankration/mixed martial arts and submission wrestling competition.

NAGA Tournament Results September 10 ’16: Congratulations to everyone who competed. NAGA attracts some of the best competitors and competing is a challenge in itself. So keep on enjoying the challenge and making big picture progress.

Adam Posener: Expert – Belt winner, Ayden Arnold: Expert- Silver, Marques Calapiz- Adavanced: Silver, Micah Calapiz: Adavanced- Silver, Kingston Park: Beginner – Silver and Bronze in his first Gi division ( Roll BJJ Partnership), Linh Thuy Diep: Beginner – Gold.

I will describe in some detail the expert divisions. For Adam this was quite a goal and accomplishment. He competed against two kids who have won multiple tournaments in World Championships. Against Russel the score was 15-0 and against Winter, he locked in, for the first time in competition, an inverted triangle, as a submission flow off the falling/flying armbar series. Ayden, in his no gi expert division, had an incredibly close match against a familiar competitor who he has competed against a couple of times before giving and taking victories. He lost by just one point in a back and forth affair that was highly contested with position changes, submission attempts by Ayden and reversals.  Ayden competed very well. Again, I want to acknowledge all the competitors for stepping up and challenging themselves in this highly competitive arena. I certainly love helping enthusiastic, willing, kids and adults through the martial arts. I feel strongly we have an excellent instructor team and we provide many opportunities for helping people get benefits from mixed martial arts practice on a variety of levels.

Here is some information on our Kids/Youth Pankration/MMA program:

Vancouver’s Premier Mixed Martial Arts school for children and youths.

With special attention given to motor skill development, mental focusing attributes, and children’s inherent capabilities. Youth kickboxing Vancouver Children’s and Teen classes are designed to emphasize:

– DISCIPLINE – RESPECT – CONFIDENCE DEVELOPMENT – SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT

The development of these qualities and principals are given extra attention because they build a strong foundation in the three battles: the Mind, the Body, and the Spirit. If developed properly, then success is assured.

We engage in a brief zazen meditation at the beginning of each class to become present, focused and prepared for what is to come in the class, and, at the end of class, we meditate briefly to lock in the experiences, center our energy, and commit to continuing making progress. As a regular practice to enhance learning, we also repeat strongly the Tenets of the School, Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control, and Indomitable Spirit, at the end of each class to solidify the development of these qualities for Kids Mixed Martial Arts Vancouver.

Our Qualification Code, which is a form to be filled out by the parent and student for advancement in rank, for Kids MMA Vancouver at Posener’s Pankration/MMA and Muay Thai, highlights that respect and school achievement, in addition to the development of combative skills in mixed martial arts, are highly valued, esteemed and developed.

The development of equanimity of spirit is also given special attention in order to deal with challenges well; especially in regards to winning and losing. The attributes of effort, determination, skill development and spirit are given special attention, as these qualities will lead to enduring success. The goal of truly doing one’s best, regardless of outcome, especially in regards to some combative sport applications, is given priority to help develop progress, growth and character. The consistent and continuous goal of making progress in all areas, both on the mat and off, will help develop a student’s full long term potential for Kids/Youth MMA Vancouver at Posener’s Pankration/MMA and Muay Thai.

Budo Kids Jiu-Jitsu Vancouver Tournament Results from Posener’s MMA

Here are the results from the Submission Only, IBJJF style, Round Robin Kids Jiu-Jitsu Vancouver Tournament held on Sunday June 12 ’16. In this tournament 3 points where given for a submission win, 1 point for a draw where neither competitor submits the other and 0 points where given for a loss.

Kids Jiu-Jitsu Vancouver

Kids Jiu-Jitsu Vancouver

Ayden Arnold: Gold. 4 matches: 2 Submissions and 2 Draws,  Ayden got a rear naked choke submission and an entangled armbar submission. Ayden did some very good matches and is making good progress.  Adam Posener: Silver. 5 matches: 1 Submission and 4 Draws. Adam got triangle choke and his other matches where all draws but he was certainly trying to get a submission but was having some difficulty with the size, which he is not quite used to, at this point. It was challenging for him because he competed against some larger kids from about 13 pounds to 25 pounds heavier. We are focusing on the positives where experiences like this can help a student become more stimulated to improve and make further improvements in particular aspects of their game. The opportunity is available to improve strong points to defeat larger opponents and to develop other strategies and sensitivities to adjust one’s style and create an improved flow. It was great for both Adam and Ayden to get 5 and 4 matches respectively. It was a good test in spirit and technique.

Dylan Cheng: Silver- 2 matches: 1 Draw and 1 Loss, Dylan had some great matches and has gone back and forth on the podium with some of the top kids in his division.  Brandon Cheng: Silver – 1 Submission with an armbar submission and one loss. Brandon is a phenom in skill and they are certainly putting work, effort, time and energy on improving their mixed martial arts skills.

As I always say and will reiterate in the article below, the main focus is to develop equanimity of spirit and focus on getting experience, making progress in spirit, confidence, technique and character regardless of sporting outcome in the short term. The focus, which is interesting and challenging, is to develop a balanced perspective and have broad success. Mixed Martial Arts is the ultimate and it is great to teach kids striking, grappling and a philosophy of success where the development of combative skills are the vehicle to drive greater success and understanding in life skills, self defense, mental discipline and fitness.
