At the BFL 63 MMA event on Saturday September 21  ’19, Gio Platon wins by KO in the first round at the 23 second mark for his required amateur mma title defense prior to turning pro officially against an experienced highly touted champion from California. Also, Oguzhan Yalcin wins his 3rd mma cage fight by unanimous decision prior to his moving up in mma class for Posener’s MMA Vancouver.

Firstly, I would like to describe Gio’s fight. Gio landed a straight right early in the round after his opponent landed a shot, leg kick, as is my recollection. Then Gio turned the spirit on to maintain the edge and landed his right hand clean, which dropped his opponent and he followed up with a flurry of hammerfists, which caused the referee to intervene and stop the fight. Gio retains his MMA title.

Thanks are in order for many people. Some are pictured in our group shot above. From left to right, our beloved George Kassimatis, who has been at our school for over 20 years, having had a successful championship professional mma career himself. George teaches at an elite level all aspects of mixed martial artst to regular students, fighters and fitness enthusiasts.  Dan Golkar of Scorpion MMA has been welcoming, open minded and promoting a group win/win concept to help fighters be their best and compete successfully at the highest level professionally. Dan has worked with countless top professionals in MMA with a positive spirit. Next is myself with a smiley face. Besides me is Richard Fast the Cage side manager who checks the fighters before they get in the cage and he is always, in my experience, attentive to their mental, physical and emotional state and is an encouraging force helping them do their best as they enter the cage, which is no small feat. Besides Gio is Tristan Connely the owner of Checkmat MMA Gym. Tristan recently took a fight at UFC Vancouver on 5 days notice in a higher weight division against a more experienced opponent and shocked the world earning a $100K bonus and getting major recognition. The Checkmat group and affiliates have many top professionals working together to be their best and reach their potential. Also thanks to the other instructors and supporters, Costa Rojas, Hayden Francis, Emilio Ditrocchio and many others.

Gio has grown tremendously as a fighter and a person over the last 7 or 8 years at our academy. He has an explosive style that is certainly going to be appealing as he now gets ready to turn professional. Gio has dynamic striking, explosive takedowns, good top control, excellent strength and conditioning, coordination and athletics,  and he is improving in all areas. He is motivated to do his best and challenge his potential.

Oguzhan Yalcin wins by unanimous decision, 30 – 27, 30 -27 and 29 -28 against a more experienced in mma opponent. Of course, we know Oguzhan can wrestle and in the 9 months or so of MMA Vancouver. Coming from Turkey, Oguzhan is looking forward to pursuing his mma dreams. Oguzhan is making good improvements in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu. The 3 round fight had all elements and many similarities. On the feet Oguzhan did well striking landing shots and taking some shots. Oguzhan blended his striking with both offensive and defensive takedowns. On the ground Oguzhan was able to land some ground and pound, pass guard for some moments and posture effectively in the guard against, I believe an opponent with some experience in Jiu-Jitsu. He was able to fight his fight and get a clean win. Great work Oguzhan in the cage and balancing training and work responsibilities. Brandon is an excellent competitor with great coaching and we appreciate his positive competitive spirit.

Thank you to all members and supporters for their encouragement. We look forward to future challenges and victories. OSU! Challenge and Victory can take many forms and it is not always in the cage as martial arts is both on and off the mat.

The fuel of the program is progress and a student testing gives inner and outer growth on the ultimate achievement of the realization of their potential.

Here is a description of the purpose of testing:

The Purpose of Testing for Mixed Martial Arts Vancouver.

The Purpose of Testing for Mixed Martial Arts Vancouver

The Purpose of Testing

  • Progress Check:- To pinpoint areas of strengths and weaknesses. To learn to turn the weakness into strengths and to make the strong points stronger.
  • Provide Reinforcement:-  (internally and externally) Internally, personal satisfaction upon achievement and externally, the receipt and status of belt and certificate.
  • Teaches Goal Setting and Achievement:- Discipline and Application of martial concepts are needed. “To plan your work and work your plan.”
  • Rules:
  • 1. All start at the bottom
  • 2. Everyone works
  • 3. Nothing is Free.
  • Counterpoint: “Training is its own reward.”

Purpose of Test

By James Keating

We have testing because we wish to go beyond the normal levels of skill. To undergo such rigors is symbolic of fighting for one’s very life. An ancient ritual of survival where one earns the right to exist and enter into a lifelong struggle for self-perfection and enlightenment. When each test is successfully completed we do not see an end, but rather a beginning. A new starting point for our inner-selves. Every test is separate and unique. To compare tests is to miss the basic premise of the martial arts. The “individual spirit” must always be placed before the physical and mental limitations. We are taught to have personal and social balance; to stand with confidence and poise. This individuality is what eventually leads to mastery, a process of self-realization. One should always train hard with control and respect. We are being tested on many levels besides just the conquering of foes.

Testing is not always a physical matter, sometimes it is a “right of passage” via daily life. Look deeply into your concepts of rank, testing and related endeavors. Win, lose, pass or fail you must conduct yourself in a manner befitting a warrior at all times. Whether testing or being tested, you need only to practice with all your being and nothing shall come between you and your dream.

Congratulations to the competitors who went for it at the Can- Am International Martial arts Tournament in Richmond B.C. on Sunday April 28 ’19. Rachel Hofer got two belts In the MMA division winning decisively and moving up in weight category to get an extra shot and an extra challenge. She was rewarded for her efforts by being awarded the most outstanding MMA Competitor of the tournament. Awesome Rachel. She also got a bronze medal in the Kickboxing competition and would have also competed in BJJ but was too late registering. We look forward to her progress and next steps in her training.

Adam Posener also won a belt in the MMA division competing against a 16 year old and winning a tough match cleanly with 3 out of 3 takedowns and top position control and active ground and pound striking. He was close to finishing the arm triangle choke from the side mount, which was tight but defended strongly by a very good competitor. Great to see those excellent young men compete and conduct themselves well.

Tabitha Tam won a gold medal in the Gi BJJ, a silver medal in the MMA, and a silver medal in the No Gi BJJ. Tabby has certainly been going for it in competitions and apparently enjoying the challenge.

Zola Mitchell won a bronze and a Silver in BJJ and she is also enjoying the competitive experience and making progress each time out. OSU!

Gus and Rachel both got Bronze in the Kickboxing. Gus moved up to fight a 211 pounder in the advanced division against an experienced opponent.. great work Gus. You will learn and progress. Win or learn is the common expression but, in my opinion, progress is always the driving force; equanimity of spirit. Honorable mention to Stas and Edison for getting their feet wet in the early stages of their competitive kickboxing experience. Great to see them enjoying the challenge and developing skills.

Adam Posener had 2 fights with 2 guillotine submissions.

Tabbitha Tam got gold in BJJ with a Gi and got gold in No Gi or Submission Wrestling. However, there was no one close to her age for MMA, which was disappointing. It would have been nice to see more mma competitors, especially considering the growth of the art and the sport.

Zola also got a gold in the No Gi / Submission Wrestling and had some tough matches with The Gi in her BJJ division. I think this is Zola’s first gold medal and that is always sweet…

Ozguzhan Yalcin fought in his first Cage Fight in MMA Vancouver at the BFL on Saturday night at the Hardrock Casino in Coquitlam, BC. The fight went the distance and could have been called for either fighter. In the first round Ozhan had the back and the mount for a large proportion of the round and was close to securing the Rear Naked Choke. In the second round there was some exchanges of grappling and Damon did secure a double leg from the cage by getting his hands clasped together and put Ozhan on his back. However, Ozhan did get a guillotine choke, with his neck caught, but was unable to finish. In the third round Ozhan executed some impressive wrestling takedowns but did get in a couple of triangle catches, which were defended quite well.. It was a close fight and I sincerely commend Ozhan for taking the challenge of stepping in to the cage with only a few months of MMA training. I am confident he will learn and keep applying his new skills and be very successful in MMA competitions. The future is very bright for this awesome young man.

On Sunday March 17 ’19 there were the Kickboxing competitions. Gus Rodriquez got another gold after a couple of tough matches, Lance Kawi got a silver medal after 3 tough matches, Edison Sun got a silver medal in his first Kickboxing tournament and Honorable mention goes to Stas Kokshin for fighting well in a close match in his first tournament. The experience helps growth. The concept ‘Pressure Builds Diamonds’, is useful in the pursuit of mixed martial arts excellence. The tournament and competitive experience does give someone something to look forward to and a goal to focus on. That is a positive and we want to stress those.. Right!. 🙂

Huge Thank you to our awesome instructor team: George Kassimatis, Costa Rojas, Ed Kumar,Hayden Francis,  Gus Rodriquez, Oguzhan Yalcin, Francis Tiapis, Victor Tiapis, Lance Kawi, Marijana Slavnic, Julian Paul and the other assistants. You are appreciated.

Also thank you to all the family and friends and students who support the school, its mission and our events. OSU!

George Kassimatis will be teaching the Begginner’s No Gi Jiu-Jitsu class on Monday’s from 6:45 pm to 8 pm. Again, we want to immensely thank Mr. Jonathan Chan for his instruction in this time slot for the last year but his work has made that day and time untenable. George, with his boundless enthusiasm and love for MMA Vancouver, has made that time available, as he coordinates his work, parenting, teaching and his practice. I am confident the students will get great benefit from participating in this class, as we move forward in skills and spirits for 2019.

We certainly look forward to growing this class and the students can get benefit by adding this class into their schedule. Hayden teaches the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class with the Gi on Wednesday’s from 7 – 8 pm. If you want to try, let me know, as it will benefit your MMA Vancouver skills.

We would like to warmly welcome Oguzhan Yalcin, pronounced Ozhan, to our instructor team. Ozhan has been practicing wrestling for a number of years. He was a Turkish national wrestling champion as a junior. He will be helping and teaching the Kids MMA Vancouver classes on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 4:30 – 6 pm. He conveys good wrestling skills and has experience in teaching kids, as his demeanor and instruction demonstrate understanding for that group’s learning potential.  He is also highly motivated to compete in MMA and we are excited to help him in his MMA journey.

We have a full schedule of classes for 2019 to help students grow in skill, fitness, self defense and sport. Please take a look at the schedule of classes we offer, and if you have any questions of how to take your development to the next level, we are happy to help. Just send me a message or ask me when you see me. OSU! 2019!
