Today we are going to explain part of the philosophical foundations of our art. For many years we have been describing our style as, ‘ A mixed martial arts style emphasizing traditional philosophy’. Sometimes these days the traditional backbone of the art gets neglected and the principle of Kaizen is an important part of the philosophy to be aware of. Other traditional philosophies will also be explained and with regular attendance and reading more will be enlightened.

This principle, which has its origin in the Japanese tradition, is central to benefiting the martial arts practitioner. It has also been applied in various business organizations to great benefit.

When we come to the dojo we should practice patience, awareness, positive attitude and work on making small improvements regularly; even if they appear slight because over time they will add up and be substantial.

Kaizen is the principle of constant and never ending improvement in our lives. It is a principle that the Samurai applied every morning they woke up by beginning the day with a specific goal of improvement in mind. At the core of Kaizen is patience which is required for improvement since you very rarely see the effects of your struggles rapidly.


As a beginner it looks almost impossible to master the tasks that are required to earn your black belt and yet it is achieved one step at a time. There are no shortcuts, no simple ways to get there. As you strive to improve one thing at a time you slowly become the person with the skills to earn your black belt, under the careful and watchful eye of your Sensei. The modern warrior is always mindful of where he is at and where he is going at all times. Since our world is always changing around us our goals and targets are in constant motion and ever changing. A wise objective today may be a foolish goal tomorrow so it is always important that one re-evaluates their goals and and focus on a daily basis. Martial artists are capable of extreme concentration and focus on particular goals and targets. It is our goal/target selection that is always changing and we must be mindful of this in order to achieve success. When in your training and you reach the point that you have done your 100 front punches, you should always do one more in order to improve. Only doing the required amount will take you on a path of long training. That one extra punch, kick, kata is what makes the difference in your training and daily lives. This establishes the spirit required to achieve in today’s world as well as the world of the future. You must always do one more than needed to be a step above the other people as life is a competition. It is a competition that only you can fail.


In your training your Sensei will give you the tools to achieve your black belt, but earning it is up to you. We can not push you to train outside of the dojo. We are not there watching the type of person you are becoming each step of the day. We only know what we see inside of our training halls…so it is up to you to attain greatness…to attain honor…to attain your black belt. Kaizen is the path and it is a path forged out of necessity and in time where anything less meant death.

From a new Mom to the avid sports enthusiast, Posener’s Fight Fit Boot camp will provide that extra push everyone needs to help get them the results they want. Posener’s Fight Fit Boot Camp will consist of a combination of high intensity functional movements, punching and kicking combinations using pads with a partner. As well as static (stationary) exercises that will increase muscular endurance while melting fat at the same time!




Posener’s Fight Fit Boot camp will be lead by ISSA Certified Personal Trainer Chris Toews. Chris is also a student of Posener’s Pankration/ MMA and a gold medalist in the art of San Shou (Chinese kickboxing) at the Tiger Balm International. With his love of the sport, winning attitude and fitness orientated lifestyle, who better to have push you than this guy!

Vancouver’s ultimate Submission Wrestling training for: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Self Defense, Fitness, Mental Discipline and Sport.

Our Submission Wrestling classes utilize techniques adapted from free-style wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu – BJJ Vancouver, “Catch-as-catch-can” (Folk American wrestling), Catch Wrestling, Shoot wrestling, Sambo, and Judo. These techniques are modified to be applicable for Pankration, MMA fighting (Mixed Martial Arts) and Submission wrestling as a sport. I am a 39 year old mother of 3 children. I weighed 185 pounds last year. Since training at Posener’s Pankration/MMA and Muay Thai I have gained confidence, gained strength, lost weight and gained a new family. My training started last September going to kickboxing 2 times a week. After about 6 months I was interested in competing so I had to step my game up so I took Strength and Conditioning with Gustavo 2 times a week. This class helped me with speed agility n strength. Everyone in this class is so supportive of one another. After a few months I started taking Chris’s Fight Fit Boot Camp. This class is sure to turn u into a machine. I lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks. I competed in the can Am’s in May n won silver. Things for me just get better everyday thanks to my family at Poseners.

We have two types of Kickboxing programs at our school:

Muay Thai Kickboxing and Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing.

Here is a brief description of the two programs and their differences:

Muay Thai Kickboxing:

Our traditional Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program develops the main benefits of Self Defense, Fitness, Mental Discipline and Sport. Our Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program utilizes techniques and principles from the Thai tradition, Dutch Kickboxing methods, Japanese methods and principles, and concepts and techniques from Western Boxing. Our style, which has been taught by Simon Posener, who has been training for almost 35 years and teaching full time for 25 years, is constantly evolving and improving, as that is our original goal. The desire to grow, evolve and improve is constant.  The instructors are experienced, personable, knowledgeable and have a passion for teaching the art and improving teaching methods and techniques. We have a long history of producing excellent mixed martial artists and champions of Muay Thai Kickboxing and Pankration / MMA.


One of the main differences between the Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program and the Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program is the application of progressive levels of contact sparring, which occurs in the traditional class. Stylistically, the classes are similar. The traditional Muay Thai class is Fitness and Combat intensive. The Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing class is more Fitness and technique intensive and less sparring intensive.


In the Traditional class once a student learns the A,B,C’s of defense, which are the  basic defenses from the main strikes used in Muay Thai, which are very important for developing confidence, the basic footwork patterns, and the execution of the basic strikes and clinches, a student will learn progressive levels of contact sparring. Sparring is a requirement for progress in the system. At the beginning levels the sparring is light to medium contact and at the advanced levels a student will participate in full contact, full Muay Thai sparring. Individual differences are considered in the timing and onset of sparring. Progress is also based on the individual, as everyone is unique in their goals and challenges,  and they are compared to their own progress.  Once a student is comfortable with the basics and has a desire to spar, with instructor approval, a graduated method will be started. The benefits of sparring are many. A student will learn to handle pressure of various types, develop physical and mental discipline,  and get a great workout. The pressure from contact sparring is also very important in application of self defense techniques, which are also a part of the curriculum. Self defense applications are taught within the classes and other classes within the school. Also, the Muay Thai sparring will benefit the competitive aspect of Muay Thai Kickboxing, Western Kickboxing, Shootboxing, Sanshou and Pankration/MMA.


Our goal in the training is to develop the technique and spirit of the art to the highest level, build camaraderie, and develop a student’s full, balanced, personal potential.

Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing

The Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program develops the main benefits of Self Defense, Fitness and Mental Discipline. This program is stylistically the same as the traditional Muay Thai Kickboxing class but does not have the goal of hard contact sparring or direct Sport application. However, many of the competitors and students who participate in the traditional Muay Thai Kickboxing program also participate in the Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing class because it is an excellent workout and will, without question, improve fitness levels and will provide an opportunity for further skill development. The classes are less formal, done to music, and do not have the pressure of full contact sparring. It is a focused class with the goal of developing skills and peak fitness levels. Advancement in the program is based on a progressive 10 level system. Students advance in the curriculum based on attendance, which is the most important aspect especially within the beginning levels, skill development, and personal fitness level improvements. The advancement of the student is based on their own progress, as everyone has unique challenges and goals.


The classes are a high energy explosive workout. The training will develop cardio vascular fitness, aerobic and anaerobic,  muscular strength and muscular endurance, flexibility, burn fat, and improve energy levels. There will not be contact free sparring. We will, however, utilize: sharp shooting techniques, which are non contact, one step sparring, interactive drills and, for more advanced students, semi-free sparring. There is also a self defense component taught specifically, which includes self defense applications of Muay Thai Kickboxing and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu.


There are many goals which can be obtained in the Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver classes. We emphasize an effective workout utilizing Muay Thai Kickboxing techniques to get the student in the best shape they can. We also provide free nutritional counselling, upon request, and provide diet tips to teach the relationship of a healthy lifestyle and diet on mental and physical fitness levels.  As we work together in the class in a spirit of growth and progress, the goal is to make progress on many levels, get results, have fun and make friends.

Welcome to Vancouver’s new Strength & Conditioning classes for MMA and Fitness at Posener’s Pankration/MMA and Muay Thai. First and foremost, strength and conditioning is coming to the forefront of MMA and Kickboxing training. Fighters and trainers alike are realizing that to bring an athlete to their highest level, they need to train (in an educated fashion) with resistance, or, weights. Specifically, by engaging the Central Nervous System (“CNS”) through the big lifts such as the Deadlift and the squat, you can achieve much greater overall muscle recruitment at will.



This ability is favourable in combat situations because greater muscle recruitment translates to greater force and power exerted, over a longer period of time and with less perceived effort. The focus is to train anaerobically and/or metabolically, where anaerobic means “without oxygen,” and metabolic training means “completing structural and compound exercises with little rest in between exercises in an effort to maximize calorie burn and increase metabolic rate during and after the workout.” Choosing these training principles for MMA leads to optimal muscular endurance as well as a stronger central nervous system, so that the greatest force available to the fighter can be utilized, without gassing them before the fight has gone the distance. In later classes, we will be utilizing a specialized computer software to track fighters statistics.



These stats are including but not limited to: VO2 Max, Heart Rate Max, 1 Rep Max (for multiple lifts), Resting and Working Heart Rate, Progressive Overload progress and injuries (if any). We will also monitor basic strengths and weaknesses so we know what to work on and how to improve each fighter and student individually. With this information, there will be more opportunity for advancement, especially if the individual opts for one on one, personal training.



We will be putting tools to use such as: Kettlebells, Barbells, Dumbells, Plyometric boxes, Resistance bands, Heavy bags, Thai pads, and sometimes simply our own bodyweight, to achieve this goal. Our program is for the athlete, competitor and fitness enthusiasts alike. It is for men and women looking for a fast and efficient path to fat loss, better body composition and physique toning/sculpting, improved energy and metabolism and confidence.
