We have two types of Kickboxing programs at our school:

Muay Thai Kickboxing and Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing.

Here is a brief description of the two programs and their differences:

Muay Thai Kickboxing:

Our traditional Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program develops the main benefits of Self Defense, Fitness, Mental Discipline and Sport. Our Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program utilizes techniques and principles from the Thai tradition, Dutch Kickboxing methods, Japanese methods and principles, and concepts and techniques from Western Boxing. Our style, which has been taught by Simon Posener, who has been training for almost 35 years and teaching full time for 25 years, is constantly evolving and improving, as that is our original goal. The desire to grow, evolve and improve is constant.  The instructors are experienced, personable, knowledgeable and have a passion for teaching the art and improving teaching methods and techniques. We have a long history of producing excellent mixed martial artists and champions of Muay Thai Kickboxing and Pankration / MMA.

 

One of the main differences between the Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program and the Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program is the application of progressive levels of contact sparring, which occurs in the traditional class. Stylistically, the classes are similar. The traditional Muay Thai class is Fitness and Combat intensive. The Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing class is more Fitness and technique intensive and less sparring intensive.

 

In the Traditional class once a student learns the A,B,C’s of defense, which are the  basic defenses from the main strikes used in Muay Thai, which are very important for developing confidence, the basic footwork patterns, and the execution of the basic strikes and clinches, a student will learn progressive levels of contact sparring. Sparring is a requirement for progress in the system. At the beginning levels the sparring is light to medium contact and at the advanced levels a student will participate in full contact, full Muay Thai sparring. Individual differences are considered in the timing and onset of sparring. Progress is also based on the individual, as everyone is unique in their goals and challenges,  and they are compared to their own progress.  Once a student is comfortable with the basics and has a desire to spar, with instructor approval, a graduated method will be started. The benefits of sparring are many. A student will learn to handle pressure of various types, develop physical and mental discipline,  and get a great workout. The pressure from contact sparring is also very important in application of self defense techniques, which are also a part of the curriculum. Self defense applications are taught within the classes and other classes within the school. Also, the Muay Thai sparring will benefit the competitive aspect of Muay Thai Kickboxing, Western Kickboxing, Shootboxing, Sanshou and Pankration/MMA.

 

Our goal in the training is to develop the technique and spirit of the art to the highest level, build camaraderie, and develop a student’s full, balanced, personal potential.

Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing

The Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program develops the main benefits of Self Defense, Fitness and Mental Discipline. This program is stylistically the same as the traditional Muay Thai Kickboxing class but does not have the goal of hard contact sparring or direct Sport application. However, many of the competitors and students who participate in the traditional Muay Thai Kickboxing program also participate in the Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing class because it is an excellent workout and will, without question, improve fitness levels and will provide an opportunity for further skill development. The classes are less formal, done to music, and do not have the pressure of full contact sparring. It is a focused class with the goal of developing skills and peak fitness levels. Advancement in the program is based on a progressive 10 level system. Students advance in the curriculum based on attendance, which is the most important aspect especially within the beginning levels, skill development, and personal fitness level improvements. The advancement of the student is based on their own progress, as everyone has unique challenges and goals.

 

The classes are a high energy explosive workout. The training will develop cardio vascular fitness, aerobic and anaerobic,  muscular strength and muscular endurance, flexibility, burn fat, and improve energy levels. There will not be contact free sparring. We will, however, utilize: sharp shooting techniques, which are non contact, one step sparring, interactive drills and, for more advanced students, semi-free sparring. There is also a self defense component taught specifically, which includes self defense applications of Muay Thai Kickboxing and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu.

 

There are many goals which can be obtained in the Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver classes. We emphasize an effective workout utilizing Muay Thai Kickboxing techniques to get the student in the best shape they can. We also provide free nutritional counselling, upon request, and provide diet tips to teach the relationship of a healthy lifestyle and diet on mental and physical fitness levels.  As we work together in the class in a spirit of growth and progress, the goal is to make progress on many levels, get results, have fun and make friends.

George Kassimatis will be teaching the Begginner’s No Gi Jiu-Jitsu class on Monday’s from 6:45 pm to 8 pm. Again, we want to immensely thank Mr. Jonathan Chan for his instruction in this time slot for the last year but his work has made that day and time untenable. George, with his boundless enthusiasm and love for MMA Vancouver, has made that time available, as he coordinates his work, parenting, teaching and his practice. I am confident the students will get great benefit from participating in this class, as we move forward in skills and spirits for 2019.

We want to congratulate Hayden Francis on getting his BJJ Black Belt. He has helped the students fine tune their technique. We would like to warmly welcome Oguzhan Yalcin, pronounced Ozhan, to our instructor team. Ozhan has been practicing wrestling for a number of years. He was a Turkish national wrestling champion as a junior. He will be helping and teaching the Kids MMA Vancouver classes on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 4:30 – 6 pm. He conveys good wrestling skills and has experience in teaching kids, as his demeanor and instruction demonstrate understanding for that group’s learning potential.  He is also highly motivated to compete in MMA and we are excited to help him in his MMA journey.

 

We have a full schedule of classes for 2019 to help students grow in skill, fitness, self defense and sport. Here are the results from the Can-Am International Martial Arts Championship on Saturday and Sunday May 26 and 27  ’18 from Posener’s Martial Arts Vancouver. I use the general term because this tournament has many different martial arts events. We had students compete in Sanshou on Saturday, which is basically a combination of Kickboxing and Wrestling, Submission Wrestling, which is synonymous with no gi brazilian jiu-jitsu, Kickboxing and MMA, which is also referred to as mixed martial arts, pankration and other terms.

In the Sanshou Saturday events, Olando Milford took the gold. Olando has been training for the last year at our branch location at Canada Scaffolding taught by Coach Chris Toews, who also teaches the Fight Fit Bootcamp class on Sundays and trains regularly at the main dojo. Nigel Chan re-injured his shoulder getting thrown off the mat, as I was told, and could not continue. I do remember the initial injury Nigel sustained getting thrown previously, which did require a fairly lengthy recovery time. We all wish Nigel well and a full and speedy recovery.

 

On Sunday we started out with the MMA competition. Tabby had a couple of fights and performed a couple of submissions with an armbar and entangled arm bar or choke. Adam also had a couple of fights and submitted his opponent with 2 kimuras from the north/south position. I put the touch gloves pic because the tournament was run well by Ryan C and he had consideration for safety, fairness and good spirit. Well done for him running the division for his first time, which can be challenging. I hope to see more people come out.

Linhh Thuy Diep competed in her first Kickboxing fight and did very well. She lost in the final match to a more polished fighter but gave it her all. Great work for going for it and challenging her self, her skill set and having a good experience. This well help in gaining confidence for next time.

 

Overall it was a well run event. In fact it was the 39th annual version of this event and I do remember the first couple of years of this occasion. Ken Low has always made strong efforts to put on solid events. Thank you to the awesome, committed, loyal instructor team who work with their skills and heart to deliver benefits to the students with the hope that the benefits will spread to others, George Kassimatis, Costa Rojas, Emilio Ditrocchio, Chris Toews, Hayden Francis,  Andrew De Leon, Adam Posener, Gus Rodgriquez, Julian Paul,  Ed Kumar, Marijana Slavnic, Paul Gibbons and the other assistant instructors. On April 21 ’18 Adam Posener and Ayden Arnold tested for the Junior Black Belt at Posener’s Pankration/ MMA Vancouver along with a number of other students and students testing for stripes.

 

 

The results are in. After approximately 8-9 years Adam Posener and Ayden Arnold will graduate the first course and receive their Junior Black Belt. I will talk about the JUNIOR BLACK belt more below. Also receiving their new belts are: Hunter Manness – Blue Belt, Stefano Lepore – Purple belt, Sharlie Young – Orange belt, Luca Siracusa – Orange belt, and Kiera Lajeunesse – Yellow belt. Advancing on stripes are Zola Mitchell, Luka Perez, James Wolf, Ronin Sharma, Arjun Sharma, Elijah De Leon, Tabitha Tam, Aryan Kalia, Artin Nazari, Rodean Nazari, and Ernesto Lepore.

 

 

I often joke a bit and describe the Junior black belt as not indicating acceptance into a ninja clan, admittance or passing the navy seal indoctrination, becoming a professional ufc or mma fighter or being a hired killer. It does signify some basic understanding of striking, wrestling and Jiu- jitsu and does indicate some level of proficiency for a junior. It does also indicate some basic understanding of the philosophy of the school, which is exemplified in the black belt oath and student qualification code. So it promotes some higher virtues, responsibility and an improved level of maturity. It does not equate with an adult black belt. The adult black belt incorporates a more advanced  curriculum and higher level, as would be expected. Adam and Ayden are both 13 years old.

 

The Junior black belt is an acknowledgement of where they have come from, the advancements they have made and promotes a new level of progress and growth, which is expected in the future. The goal is for them to have a greater understanding and positive expectations for their future development moving forward with confidence, gratitude, humility and some higher virtue.

We emphasize technical development in striking, wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu for the testing and the mma sparring is given special attention for the application of the techniques. Adam and Ayden sparred 5 mma rounds for their testing, satisfied the physical requirements and demonstrated their techniques to the best of their current ability. The concept being, naturally, that their skill levels will continue to improve to their highest level, as supported on the Junior black belt oath. The goal is to develop strongly the ‘no quit’ spirit, constant improvement with the Kaizen philosophical application, and physical, mental and spiritual development to their highest level, as the ideal.
