Great work to all the students for being consistent in time, energy and effort. We have been stressing some key ingredients lately that effort and inner victory is the key for success. Also to  remember the 3 rules of the traditional school, 1. All start at the bottom 2. Everyone Works 3. Nothing is Free and the 3 Martial Virtues: 1. Respect 2. Compassion 3. Gratitude. The philosophy that principles on the mat can be applied off the mat is a central principle of the traditional philosophy that leads to well rounded success. Here is one more application of attributes on the mat and their corresponding principle off the mat:

Physical Mental

  • Speed                                            *Quick Thinking
  • Power                                           *Knowledge
  • Good technical form              *Good manners/etiquette
  • Stamina                                       *Perseverance
  • Flexibility                                   *Open mind
  • Accuracy                                    *Realistic thinking
  • Coordination                             *Balance of personal and professional life
  • Timing                                           *Being Punctual

Here is a reprint of some traditional philosophy from many years ago. Good stuff:

Philosophy of a Champion for Martial Arts Vancouver

-By Benny “The Jet” Urquidez

  • Never change what works
  • Grasp whatever you can, be open-minded about everything
  • Learn what you want to learn, but never close your mind to something different
  • Knowing yourself helps you to know others
  • Never stop learning, never limit yourself to what you think you may attain
  • To be in 100% physical shape you must first be in 100% mental shape
  • Respect your judgment. Remember, you cannot fool yourself
  • Take defeat as a process of learning
  • Never degrade yourself by thinking negatively
  • If you lose, figure out why you lost and find the defenses which will help you next time
  • In and out of the ring the secret of a Martial Artist is to control his anger
  • There is no time for being old-fashioned. One must progress
  • Learn to train your mind to be ahead of your body
  • Beat the pain mentally and you can go on forever
  • Don’t try to be just as good as somebody else; strive to be better
  • The way you train is the way you react.

**I started studying this philosophy from one of the world’s greatest champions over 25 years ago.  He was ahead of his time and the principles in this philosophy are excellent and applicable in today’s Mixed Martial Arts environment.  For students it is highly recommended that you think about applying these principles, as it will be a benefit to you in your practice.  OSU!

Every principle has deep meaning. For example, Knowing yourself helps you to know others has roots in Eastern philosophical practices of meditation of various types. These qualities or understandings facilitate compassion because we realize even with our differences there are many similarities; and it is useful in combat because it helps us read our opponent.

The principle of being in 100 % physical shape and requiring 100% mental shape is illuminating for people because they do not see the inter-relatedness of the mind body and spirit. Also, for example to highlight the concept here, being in 100% physical shape requires a good degree of mental discipline.

Studying these principles and applying them will help your development and progress on and off the mat and assist in our Martial Arts Vancouver program at Posener’s Pankration/MMA, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Submission Wrestling, No gi Jiu-jitsu, Cardio Kickboxing and Weapons.

Oguzhan Yalcin wins BFL MMA Title: Posener’s MMA Vancouver

Oguzhan Yalcin wins BFL MMA Title: Posener’s MMA Vancouver

MMA Vancouver

MMA Vancouver

On Saturday night November 16 ’19 Oguzhan Yalcin wins the BFL Featherweight MMA Title by unanimous decision from Posener’s MMA Vancouver.

The fight went the distance and Oguzhan largely exerted his game plan in the fight. He fought a very tough and good opponent from Tristar Gym, who was well schooled in all aspects of MMA. Oguzhan having a wrestling advantage was able to dictate where the fight went and was successful in takedowns, controlling position, landing ground and pound and achieving the mount on a number of occasions.

Having trained at Posener’s MMA Vancouver for almost a year and having 4 fights in that time period amassing a record of 3-1, Oguzhan has achieved his first goal of his many objectives, with more to come, as he has high aspirations in the sport. Certainly the potential is strong and we are keen to help him with his adjustments to a new culture as he is coming from Turkey and there are some differences.

During his post fight interview, Oguzhan asked for a rematch for his title defense against Damon, who Oguzhan fought in his first match where he lost by a close decision in a very competitive fight. The fight was certainly close and a title defense in this situation could be good and a reasonable suggestion.

In the future, we are looking forward to having more time for skill development in the integration of striking, wrestling and Jiu-jitsu skills and strength and conditioning to help Oguzhan achieve his potential. It will be an exciting challenge and good to move forward in the journey.

We would also like to thank, as always, our awesome instructor team, Costa Rojas, George Kassimatis, Lance Kawi, Gus Rodriquez, Hayden Francis, Gio Platon, and the other assistant instructors, sparring partners and supporters of the school and philosophies. Stay tuned for updates.

(Pro Debut is scheduled for February 8 ’20 at the Vancouver Convention Center )

At the BFL 63 MMA event on Saturday September 21  ’19, Gio Platon wins by KO in the first round at the 23 second mark for his required amateur mma title defense prior to turning pro officially against an experienced highly touted champion from California. Also, Oguzhan Yalcin wins his 3rd mma cage fight by unanimous decision prior to his moving up in mma class for Posener’s MMA Vancouver.

Firstly, I would like to describe Gio’s fight. Gio landed a straight right early in the round after his opponent landed a shot, leg kick, as is my recollection. Then Gio turned the spirit on to maintain the edge and landed his right hand clean, which dropped his opponent and he followed up with a flurry of hammerfists, which caused the referee to intervene and stop the fight. Gio retains his MMA title.

Thanks are in order for many people. Some are pictured in our group shot above. From left to right, our beloved George Kassimatis, who has been at our school for over 20 years, having had a successful championship professional mma career himself. George teaches at an elite level all aspects of mixed martial artst to regular students, fighters and fitness enthusiasts.  Dan Golkar of Scorpion MMA has been welcoming, open minded and promoting a group win/win concept to help fighters be their best and compete successfully at the highest level professionally. Dan has worked with countless top professionals in MMA with a positive spirit. Next is myself with a smiley face. Besides me is Richard Fast the Cage side manager who checks the fighters before they get in the cage and he is always, in my experience, attentive to their mental, physical and emotional state and is an encouraging force helping them do their best as they enter the cage, which is no small feat. Besides Gio is Tristan Connely the owner of Checkmat MMA Gym. Tristan recently took a fight at UFC Vancouver on 5 days notice in a higher weight division against a more experienced opponent and shocked the world earning a $100K bonus and getting major recognition. The Checkmat group and affiliates have many top professionals working together to be their best and reach their potential. Also thanks to the other instructors and supporters, Costa Rojas, Hayden Francis, Emilio Ditrocchio and many others.

Gio has grown tremendously as a fighter and a person over the last 7 or 8 years at our academy. He has an explosive style that is certainly going to be appealing as he now gets ready to turn professional. Gio has dynamic striking, explosive takedowns, good top control, excellent strength and conditioning, coordination and athletics,  and he is improving in all areas. He is motivated to do his best and challenge his potential.

Oguzhan Yalcin wins by unanimous decision, 30 – 27, 30 -27 and 29 -28 against a more experienced in mma opponent. Of course, we know Oguzhan can wrestle and in the 9 months or so of MMA Vancouver. Coming from Turkey, Oguzhan is looking forward to pursuing his mma dreams. Oguzhan is making good improvements in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu. The 3 round fight had all elements and many similarities. On the feet Oguzhan did well striking landing shots and taking some shots. Oguzhan blended his striking with both offensive and defensive takedowns. On the ground Oguzhan was able to land some ground and pound, pass guard for some moments and posture effectively in the guard against, I believe an opponent with some experience in Jiu-Jitsu. He was able to fight his fight and get a clean win. Great work Oguzhan in the cage and balancing training and work responsibilities. Brandon is an excellent competitor with great coaching and we appreciate his positive competitive spirit.

Thank you to all members and supporters for their encouragement. We look forward to future challenges and victories. OSU! Challenge and Victory can take many forms and it is not always in the cage as martial arts is both on and off the mat.

Kickboxing Vancouver

We run Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver classes 3 times a week and they great for effective Muay Thai technique, fitness, and mental discipline. Our program does also include one regular class per week of Muay Thai, BJJ, Submission Wrestling or Strength and Conditioning.

In regards to body toning and sculpting we are able to utilize methods which maximize muscular development, fat burning, metabolism enhancement while developing effective combative techniques simultaneously. Check out this video and I will explain.

From the 4 pt position this routine will put your glutes on fire, if done correctly and will develop the foot articulation that is important for combative applications. We take the three basic kicks, roundhouse, front, and side/back kicks and we create a routine, that can be modified for the individual, and we perform 10 moderate speed kicks developing the correct form, followed by 10 isometric pulsating contractions with concentration to develop the muscular awareness, then we burn out approximately 10 faster reps to burn the glutes. This is done with each leg for each of the three kicks. Likely after one sequence you will feel it and if done regularly will certainly get those much desired results. Booty workouts are a popular exercise and this works them to the max and also develops effective combative attributes.

Our Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program is based on Muay Thai Kickboxing, mainly, and some Jiu-Jitsu to enhance the self defense aspect of the curriculum. People train in the class with the goal of developing the benefits of Fitness, Self defense skills, Mental Discipline and for Sport. All types of people enjoy our Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing program, both recreational and serious practitioners.

We offer a 10 level based system to impart skills and reward progress. Certificates are awarded to recognize individual progress. Advancement in the program, if that is desired,  is based on performance and attendance. In the initial stages attendance is given more importance than performance, as we are in the process of developing and installing new training habits and lifestyle changes. Since martial arts is an individual pursuit, we encourage everyone to work at their own pace to the best of their ability. At the higher levels and, as a person progresses in skill, fitness and experience, a greater adaptability and integration of technique is  required and rewarded.

Our self defense component of the program incorporates Muay thai Kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu to learn defenses from various grabs and strikes, which are a part of the curriculum, although to a lesser degree. This is a unique aspect of our course.

It is expected, as someone progresses through our program that their fitness will approach peak levels for that individual. As everyone is different, peak levels will be variable but progress is required and strong levels should be maintained.

After a student progresses through the 10 levels of skill and personal development for Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver, instructor level certifications are possible. Our Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing classes are a great way to get and stay in shape, have fun and work well with the other classes we have at the school.

Here is some information on our Pankration/MMA program with a description of the historical origins of Pankration and mixed martial arts from the origination:

Ancient Pankration

The word Pankration is a Greek word which translated means “all powers” or “all powerful”, both are acceptable translations by Greek scholars. Pankration was a sporting event in the ancient Greek Olympic games that was first introduced in the games of 648 BC. The rules of the sport were simple, no biting or eye gouging and victory was secured through knockout , submission or death. The historical records of the early pankration are shrouded and mixed with Greek mythology and it is not known whether these accounts of championship bouts and feats of strength of the champions were myth or actual accounts. What is known is that just like the boxers and wrestlers of the Olympic games the Pankration competitors refined their skills for many generations throught hundreds of years and became extremely proficient at all elements of their sport including ground fighting and submission holds to standing fighting with all types of strikes. Many of the holds, throuws and striking techniques can be seen on ther pottery, statues and drawings of those times. The ancient Oympic games were intertwined with many ceremonies and connections to the worship of gods that were pagan to the rising christian poplulation. Because of this association and the rise of christianity the games eventually came to a halt and along with it Pankration competition desappeared for many centuries.
The Olympic games were eventually adopted and reborn throughout the world alternating the competition in a new country every 4 years, however, Pankration competition was not included. It is only because of the sparse historical records and the special interests of a few individuals that Pankration is having a rebirth in this generation. Pankration MMA Vancouver.

Modern Day Pankration

The current wave of “no hold barred” and pay per view fighting events has brought with it a curiosity and interest to it’s ancient predecessor Pankration. Just as the boxing venue grew and evolved from ancient Greece to Madison Square Garden and the rest of the world, the skill, techniques, training methods, rules, attire and safety measures have also evolved. For the most part this evolution has been beneficial to the sport and it’s participants. Now after centuries ancient Greek Pankration is getting the opportunity to become Modern Pankration the same way as it’s brother boxing did.
