At the BFL 63 MMA event on Saturday September 21  ’19, Gio Platon wins by KO in the first round at the 23 second mark for his required amateur mma title defense prior to turning pro officially against an experienced highly touted champion from California. Also, Oguzhan Yalcin wins his 3rd mma cage fight by unanimous decision prior to his moving up in mma class for Posener’s MMA Vancouver.

Firstly, I would like to describe Gio’s fight. Gio landed a straight right early in the round after his opponent landed a shot, leg kick, as is my recollection. Then Gio turned the spirit on to maintain the edge and landed his right hand clean, which dropped his opponent and he followed up with a flurry of hammerfists, which caused the referee to intervene and stop the fight. Gio retains his MMA title.

Thanks are in order for many people. Some are pictured in our group shot above. From left to right, our beloved George Kassimatis, who has been at our school for over 20 years, having had a successful championship professional mma career himself. George teaches at an elite level all aspects of mixed martial artst to regular students, fighters and fitness enthusiasts.  Dan Golkar of Scorpion MMA has been welcoming, open minded and promoting a group win/win concept to help fighters be their best and compete successfully at the highest level professionally. Dan has worked with countless top professionals in MMA with a positive spirit. Next is myself with a smiley face. Besides me is Richard Fast the Cage side manager who checks the fighters before they get in the cage and he is always, in my experience, attentive to their mental, physical and emotional state and is an encouraging force helping them do their best as they enter the cage, which is no small feat. Besides Gio is Tristan Connely the owner of Checkmat MMA Gym. Tristan recently took a fight at UFC Vancouver on 5 days notice in a higher weight division against a more experienced opponent and shocked the world earning a $100K bonus and getting major recognition. The Checkmat group and affiliates have many top professionals working together to be their best and reach their potential. Also thanks to the other instructors and supporters, Costa Rojas, Hayden Francis, Emilio Ditrocchio and many others.

Gio has grown tremendously as a fighter and a person over the last 7 or 8 years at our academy. He has an explosive style that is certainly going to be appealing as he now gets ready to turn professional. Gio has dynamic striking, explosive takedowns, good top control, excellent strength and conditioning, coordination and athletics,  and he is improving in all areas. He is motivated to do his best and challenge his potential.

Oguzhan Yalcin wins by unanimous decision, 30 – 27, 30 -27 and 29 -28 against a more experienced in mma opponent. Of course, we know Oguzhan can wrestle and in the 9 months or so of MMA Vancouver. Coming from Turkey, Oguzhan is looking forward to pursuing his mma dreams. Oguzhan is making good improvements in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu. The 3 round fight had all elements and many similarities. On the feet Oguzhan did well striking landing shots and taking some shots. Oguzhan blended his striking with both offensive and defensive takedowns. On the ground Oguzhan was able to land some ground and pound, pass guard for some moments and posture effectively in the guard against, I believe an opponent with some experience in Jiu-Jitsu. He was able to fight his fight and get a clean win. Great work Oguzhan in the cage and balancing training and work responsibilities. Brandon is an excellent competitor with great coaching and we appreciate his positive competitive spirit.

Thank you to all members and supporters for their encouragement. We look forward to future challenges and victories. OSU! Challenge and Victory can take many forms and it is not always in the cage as martial arts is both on and off the mat.

Here is some information on our Submission Wrestling program:

Vancouver’s ultimate Submission Wrestling training for: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Self Defense, Fitness, Mental Discipline and Sport.

Our Submission Wrestling classes utilize techniques adapted from free-style wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu – BJJ Vancouver, “Catch-as-catch-can” (Folk American wrestling), Catch Wrestling, Shoot wrestling, Sambo, and Judo. These techniques are modified to be applicable for Pankration, MMA fighting (Mixed Martial Arts) and Submission wrestling as a sport. Our submission wrestling classes are a subsection of our Pankration curriculum.

It is the blending of our striking within the grappling context that makes our style unique and distinctive.
Whether it is the blending of striking and grappling to and from clinching, to take-downs, to ground fighting with submissions, our style is geared towards practicality.

Since our style and curriculum has a broad range of techniques, the individual student has the ability and potential to express their skills to the fullest degree.

Our classes provide an excellent physical workout developing muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardio vascular fitness and flexibility. In the process of training and getting in great shape, the student will be learning techniques that are useful for self-defence and sport.

Our classes are taught by experienced martial artists emphasizing discipline and respect with the aim of helping the student achieve their goals while enjoying the process and developing camaraderie. Many of the students and instructors have been successful using the school’s style in pankration/mixed martial arts and submission wrestling competition.

Vancouver’s finest Pankration and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA Vancouver) dojo.

Ancient Pankration

The word Pankration is a Greek word which translated means “all powers” or “all powerful”, both are acceptable translations by Greek scholars. Pankration was a sporting event in the ancient Greek Olympic games that was first introduced in the games of 648 BC. The rules of the sport were simple, no biting or eye gouging and victory was secured through knockout , submission or death. The historical records of the early pankration are shrouded and mixed with Greek mythology and it is not known whether these accounts of championship bouts and feats of strength of the champions were myth or actual accounts. What is known is that just like the boxers and wrestlers of the Olympic games the Pankration competitors refined their skills for many generations throught hundreds of years and became extremely proficient at all elements of their sport including ground fighting and submission holds to standing fighting with all types of strikes. Many of the holds, throuws and striking techniques can be seen on ther pottery, statues and drawings of those times. The ancient Oympic games were intertwined with many ceremonies and connections to the worship of gods that were pagan to the rising christian poplulation. Because of this association and the rise of christianity the games eventually came to a halt and along with it Pankration competition desappeared for many centuries.
The Olympic games were eventually adopted and reborn throughout the world alternating the competition in a new country every 4 years, however, Pankration competition was not included. It is only because of the sparse historical records and the special interests of a few individuals that Pankration is having a rebirth in this generation. Pankration MMA Vancouver.

Modern Day Pankration

The current wave of “no hold barred” and pay per view fighting events has brought with it a curiosity and interest to it’s ancient predecessor Pankration. Just as the boxing venue grew and evolved from ancient Greece to Madison Square Garden and the rest of the world, the skill, techniques, training methods, rules, attire and safety measures have also evolved. For the most part this evolution has been beneficial to the sport and it’s participants. Now after centuries ancient Greek Pankration is getting the opportunity to become Modern Pankration the same way as it’s brother boxing did.

Here are the results from the Can-Am International Martial Arts Championship on Saturday and Sunday May 26 and 27  ’18 from Posener’s Martial Arts Vancouver. I use the general term because this tournament has many different martial arts events. We had students compete in Sanshou on Saturday, which is basically a combination of Kickboxing and Wrestling, Submission Wrestling, which is synonymous with no gi brazilian jiu-jitsu, Kickboxing and MMA, which is also referred to as mixed martial arts, pankration and other terms.

In the Sanshou Saturday events, Olando Milford took the gold. Olando has been training for the last year at our branch location at Canada Scaffolding taught by Coach Chris Toews, who also teaches the Fight Fit Bootcamp class on Sundays and trains regularly at the main dojo. Nigel Chan re-injured his shoulder getting thrown off the mat, as I was told, and could not continue. I do remember the initial injury Nigel sustained getting thrown previously, which did require a fairly lengthy recovery time. We all wish Nigel well and a full and speedy recovery.

On Sunday we started out with the MMA competition. Tabby had a couple of fights and performed a couple of submissions with an armbar and entangled arm bar or choke. Adam also had a couple of fights and submitted his opponent with 2 kimuras from the north/south position. I put the touch gloves pic because the tournament was run well by Ryan C and he had consideration for safety, fairness and good spirit. Well done for him running the division for his first time, which can be challenging. I hope to see more people come out.

Linhh Thuy Diep competed in her first Kickboxing fight and did very well. She lost in the final match to a more polished fighter but gave it her all. Great work for going for it and challenging her self, her skill set and having a good experience. This well help in gaining confidence for next time.

Overall it was a well run event. In fact it was the 39th annual version of this event and I do remember the first couple of years of this occasion. Ken Low has always made strong efforts to put on solid events. Thank you to the awesome, committed, loyal instructor team who work with their skills and heart to deliver benefits to the students with the hope that the benefits will spread to others, George Kassimatis, Costa Rojas, Emilio Ditrocchio, Chris Toews, Hayden Francis,  Andrew De Leon, Adam Posener, Gus Rodgriquez, Julian Paul,  Ed Kumar, Marijana Slavnic, Paul Gibbons and the other assistant instructors. Thank you also the friends and family for their support. Looking forward to continuing passing on benefits of Posener’s Martial Arts Vancouver.

We are making a small change to the timing of our GI BJJ Vancouver program. We are going to be running the class on Wednesday’s from 7-8 pm. Here is a brief description of Hayden Francis and his philosophy:

Hayden started BJJ by taking grappling classes in high school, from then on he was hooked. His official training began in December of 2009 at Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu School and Hayden quickly adopted Jiu Jitsu as the foundation of his daily activity; helping his focus and supporting all other aspects of his life. Hayden’s teaching goals focus on conceptual learning that matches the goals and learning styles of students. Hayden believes learning concepts rather than a step-by-step process helps to make lessons more solid for students and let them follow their own path in Jiu Jitsu.

Hayden is currently a brown belt and has a wealth of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu  ( BJJ Vancouver ) and competition.
