Tabbitha Tam got gold in BJJ with a Gi and got gold in No Gi or Submission Wrestling. However, there was no one close to her age for MMA, which was disappointing. It would have been nice to see more mma competitors, especially considering the growth of the art and the sport.

Zola also got a gold in the No Gi / Submission Wrestling and had some tough matches with The Gi in her BJJ division. I think this is Zola’s first gold medal and that is always sweet…

Ozguzhan Yalcin fought in his first Cage Fight in MMA Vancouver at the BFL on Saturday night at the Hardrock Casino in Coquitlam, BC. The fight went the distance and could have been called for either fighter. In the first round Ozhan had the back and the mount for a large proportion of the round and was close to securing the Rear Naked Choke. In the second round there was some exchanges of grappling and Damon did secure a double leg from the cage by getting his hands clasped together and put Ozhan on his back. However, Ozhan did get a guillotine choke, with his neck caught, but was unable to finish. In the third round Ozhan executed some impressive wrestling takedowns but did get in a couple of triangle catches, which were defended quite well.. It was a close fight and I sincerely commend Ozhan for taking the challenge of stepping in to the cage with only a few months of MMA training. I am confident he will learn and keep applying his new skills and be very successful in MMA competitions. The future is very bright for this awesome young man.

On Sunday March 17 ’19 there were the Kickboxing competitions. Gus Rodriquez got another gold after a couple of tough matches, Lance Kawi got a silver medal after 3 tough matches, Edison Sun got a silver medal in his first Kickboxing tournament and Honorable mention goes to Stas Kokshin for fighting well in a close match in his first tournament. The experience helps growth. The concept ‘Pressure Builds Diamonds’, is useful in the pursuit of mixed martial arts excellence. The tournament and competitive experience does give someone something to look forward to and a goal to focus on. That is a positive and we want to stress those.. Right!. 🙂

George Kassimatis will be teaching the Begginner’s No Gi Jiu-Jitsu class on Monday’s from 6:45 pm to 8 pm. Again, we want to immensely thank Mr. Jonathan Chan for his instruction in this time slot for the last year but his work has made that day and time untenable. I am confident the students will get great benefit from participating in this class, as we move forward in skills and spirits for 2019.

We would like to warmly welcome Oguzhan Yalcin, pronounced Ozhan, to our instructor team. Ozhan has been practicing wrestling for a number of years. He was a Turkish national wrestling champion as a junior. He will be helping and teaching the Kids MMA Vancouver classes on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 4:30 – 6 pm. He conveys good wrestling skills and has experience in teaching kids, as his demeanor and instruction demonstrate understanding for that group’s learning potential.  He is also highly motivated to compete in MMA and we are excited to help him in his MMA journey.

We have a full schedule of classes for 2019 to help students grow in skill, fitness, self defense and sport. Fantastic Francis Tiapis Promo Video by Jon Chan: MMA Vancouver

Fantastic Francis Tiapis Promo Video by Jon Chan:  MMA Vancouver

Please check out the incredible, fantastic Francis Tiapis promo video by Jonathan Chan. It is stunning in videography and seamlessly put together. Equally impressive is the interview with Francis and his description of his journey with the application of martial arts philosophies and an incredible demonstration of how the correct philosophy has benefits and applications on the mat, in combat, and in life. I have to say I am very impressed.

If you take a look the video, with the  stunning visuals and the inspiring documentary, you will undoubtedly be affected. It is great to see Francis’s evolution in the art and life. He is currently #1 in Canada as a Flyweight with a couple of titles under his belt and a 5-0 record. He is looking to turn pro in the relatively near future. Great to see him enjoying the challenge and the positive energy.

Congratulations to Francis on a hard fought win on Saturday night, February 17 ’18 at the Coga Combat Games MMA in the US.

Here is a brief review of the fight:

In the First round , Santiago came out strong with crisp hard, fast strikes, that were perhaps a bit better than expected based on the small amount of video we could find. He came into this mma fight with a 5-1 record. There were some good exchanges by both fighters. Francis did land some low kicks, his patented overhand right, some jabs and clinch battles. Santiago did land a takedown or two but Francis was able to recover and keep battling, as he always does. The first round was close but Santiago may have gotten the round based on initiating the takedown and being busy in the clinch with some knees and punches.

In the Second Round , there were some relatively equal exchanges of strikes and some back and forth action against the cage and in the clinch. However, Francis gained top cross body side control against Santiago and Santiago was defending the position quite well considering his position close to the cage. Of course, Francis likes to execute his submission attempts from cross body side mount. That option was limited and he was close to us. We told him to get the mount, and he did effortlessly. Francis spent quite some time on the top mount and Santiago was defending strongly and Francis was able to get the back mount and was fighting strongly to finish the RNC. Santiago was defending the RNC strongly and Francis did not get the finish. Santiago was able to scramble free right at the end of the round. Francis, in my opinion, certainly got that round.

In the Third Round, there were some good exchanges of strikes, clinch battles and cage fighting that were back and forth. Santiago was using the 100% grip position to control some of Francis movement and was busy and quite strong in the clinch. Francis did fight well against this strong opponent and was able to also finish the fight on the mount. In my opinion, that strong finish and mount position got him the round.

It was a good battle with good sportsmanship by both camps. It was a pleasure to be involved with this organization that was run by an old friend of mine. The venue, and organization were professional and the sold out crowd enjoyed the action, which we had the pleasure of watching the remaining fights. Francis is now 5-0 in mma.

Thank you to our awesome instructor team, Costa Rojas, George Kassimatis, Hayden Francis,  Gus Rodriquez, Andrew De Leon, Emilio Ditrocchio, Jonathan Chan, Victor Tiapis,  and those who helped Francis get ready for this fight. We are looking forward to the next challenge.
