For many years, many martial artists who have competed in various combat sports from Jiu-Jitsu to the now popular MMA have overlooked the quality of a good strength and conditioning program. Many of these fighters thought two things; that gaining more muscle would make them slower and that they would be well conditioned for a fight by doing endless hours of “roadwork”.

As MMA has exploded these ideas that were once held are no longer.  We are now seeing fighters that have their own strength and conditioning coaches.  Some of these coaches are even being interviewed on the UFC Countdown shows leading up to the fights.  We have heard B.J. Penn rave about Marv Marinovich and what he has done for his career.

The sport of mixed martial arts is evolving.  No longer can a bar room brawler walk in the cage or ring and win a title.  Those that participate in MMA will now need to not only know how to fight but will also need to be athletic.  The likes of George St. Pierre, Brock Lesner and Jon Jones are the new breed of  mixed martial artists.  Jon Jones, who is from New York, will be fighting this Sunday August 1 on Versus.  This is an opportunity to see a true athlete get into the octagon.

With the explosion of mixed martial arts and grappling throughout Long Island, there are many amateurs and  professionals that do not have access to proper strength and conditioning coaches. For these fighters it is essential to have all aspects of training covered. A strength and coach or expert should not be a person to overlook.

So what can a strength and conditioning program do for a fighter? Here are three things:

  1.  Improve your speed, agility and quickness. Other wise known as SAQ.
  2.  Improve your strength, power and conditioning.
  3.  Improve your mental toughness
