We are making a small change to the timing of our GI BJJ Vancouver program. We are going to be running the class on Wednesday’s from 7-8 pm. This will enable the juniors who want to do the MMA class from 5-7 pm to transition into the GI BJJ class and the adults can also attend and transition to the Muay Thai from 8- 9:30 pm.

Here is a brief description of Hayden Francis and his philosophy:


Hayden started BJJ by taking grappling classes in high school, from then on he was hooked. His official training began in December of 2009 at Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu School and Hayden quickly adopted Jiu Jitsu as the foundation of his daily activity; helping his focus and supporting all other aspects of his life. Hayden’s teaching goals focus on conceptual learning that matches the goals and learning styles of students. Hayden believes learning concepts rather than a step-by-step process helps to make lessons more solid for students and let them follow their own path in Jiu Jitsu.

Hayden is currently a brown belt and has a wealth of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu  ( BJJ Vancouver ) and competition.

We are looking forward to this new time slot for the GI BJJ Vancouver class, as it should help both the students and instructor attend regularly and make progress. The Saturday time slot often conflicted with tournaments and events.



You will need a Gi for the program. Below are a couple of examples of basic Gis. We do order all our Gis from www.Bushido.ca . I am happy to announce our next charitable project initiative. We are running a grocery bag promotion where 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Brooksdale Environmental Center. The Center is involved in many aspects of environmental stewardship, education and conservation. They are a local organization with far reaching objectives. They will help save the local Salmon populations and educate on environmental conservation and care of creation and more. The minimum donation for a bag will be $5 and 100% of the proceeds will go to this excellent organization.  www.Arocha.ca



In the past we have supported Clean Water Charities, World Vision, The RJ Canuel Police Fund, Kick Drugs out of Canada and more. In this climate of change and increased consciousness on our environment and related issues, I feel this charitable promotion can create a win, win, win situation. With the wealth of information and concern on our environment, health and diet, I am hoping to do something useful on a few different levels. Simply increasing consciousness of current issues will benefit, the individual, the environment and our society.



Personally, I have taken an interest in growing natural food and being concerned with the relationship of diet and health. Considering my wear and tear injuries, being concerned with a healthy diet has helped and increased perspective. There is a personal benefit of eating more fruits and vegetables; it does make you feel good.

, I have evolved my personal practice and kept up with education and the constant pursuit of knowledge. Personally I don’t buy beef, chicken, or pork from the supermarket largely because I don’t agree with the commercialization of those industries, the effects of these industries on the environment or the humanitarian concerns for meat production. I think there is ample evidence there are health benefits of consuming less meat, especially this stressed out type, and eating more whole natural foods.

Next year I will expand on my own garden considerably. I do enjoy the Zen aspect of it, and more, and it has improved my awareness; I am looking to continue on that. This is a condensed summary of the basics, which can be expanded later.  So, as I join the Arnold campaign and others of eating less meat and being concerned with the environment, there is a hopeful opportunity to start a ripple effect of benefit. Eating natural whole foods that are produced responsibly and humanely will help a lot. Eating less meat, especially the commercially produced kind where the animals are stressed, raised in confined pens without the freedom of movement, and being aware will help; not to mention the environmental effect of some of these industries. Having the Posener’s Pankration/ MMA Vancouver / Arocha  grocery bags will also be a good reminder. The warrior way considers health multidimensional and to strive to maximize our potential and others.




In this climate of change, this promotion will help and I hope you buy some bags, tell your friends about health and our groups, inspire hope and think of benefits for yourself and others.

Here are the results from the Western Canadian Martial Arts Championships, WCMAC, at BCIT today, October 21 ’17 for Posener’s Martial Arts Vancouver.



Adam Posener: Double Gold in Gi and No Gi Jiu-Jitsu. 4 fights and four submissions. Due to the fact that there are 2 other Jiu-Jitsu tournaments this weekend and another Jiu-Jitsu tournament cancelled, it would have been nice to have seen a bigger turnout for the grappling divisions.



Jonathan Chan: Double Silver in Gi and No gi Jiu-Jitsu. There was no one in Jonathan’s division so he had to move up one or two weight divisions, which he did gladly with the perspective of getting experience and challenge. He had a nice armbar submission and worked hard in his other matches.



Lance Kawi: Bronze in Kickboxing. In this kickboxing division there was a very large turnout. In fact they had to split up the division because there was so many competitors. Lance had 2 wins and one loss. I felt Lance has improved in each of his 3 outings in Kickboxing competition and happy to have got some experience and challenge.




Great work you guys. It is always exciting to get some challenge and experience. Looking forward to further training and progress. Some exciting ideas coming up. Please stay tuned.

Here is some information on our 2 types of Kickboxing programs for Posener’s Martial Arts Vancouver.

We have two types of Kickboxing programs at our school:

Muay Thai Kickboxing and Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing.

Here is a brief description of the two programs and their differences:

Muay Thai Kickboxing:

Our traditional Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program develops the main benefits of Self Defense, Fitness, Mental Discipline and Sport. Our Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program utilizes techniques and principles from the Thai tradition, Dutch Kickboxing methods, Japanese methods and principles, and concepts and techniques from Western Boxing. Our style, which has been taught by Simon Posener, who has been training for almost 35 years and teaching full time for 25 years, is constantly evolving and improving, as that is our original goal. The desire to grow, evolve and improve is constant.  The instructors are experienced, personable, knowledgeable and have a passion for teaching the art and improving teaching methods and techniques. We have a long history of producing excellent mixed martial artists and champions of Muay Thai Kickboxing and Pankration / MMA.


One of the main differences between the Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program and the Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program is the application of progressive levels of contact sparring, which occurs in the traditional class. Stylistically, the classes are similar. The traditional Muay Thai class is Fitness and Combat intensive. The Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing class is more Fitness and technique intensive and less sparring intensive.


In the Traditional class once a student learns the A,B,C’s of defense, which are the  basic defenses from the main strikes used in Muay Thai, which are very important for developing confidence, the basic footwork patterns, and the execution of the basic strikes and clinches, a student will learn progressive levels of contact sparring. Sparring is a requirement for progress in the system. At the beginning levels the sparring is light to medium contact and at the advanced levels a student will participate in full contact, full Muay Thai sparring. Individual differences are considered in the timing and onset of sparring. Progress is also based on the individual, as everyone is unique in their goals and challenges,  and they are compared to their own progress.  Once a student is comfortable with the basics and has a desire to spar, with instructor approval, a graduated method will be started. The benefits of sparring are many. A student will learn to handle pressure of various types, develop physical and mental discipline,  and get a great workout. The pressure from contact sparring is also very important in application of self defense techniques, which are also a part of the curriculum. Self defense applications are taught within the classes and other classes within the school. Also, the Muay Thai sparring will benefit the competitive aspect of Muay Thai Kickboxing, Western Kickboxing, Shootboxing, Sanshou and Pankration/MMA.


Our goal in the training is to develop the technique and spirit of the art to the highest level, build camaraderie, and develop a student’s full, balanced, personal potential.

Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing

The Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver program develops the main benefits of Self Defense, Fitness and Mental Discipline. This program is stylistically the same as the traditional Muay Thai Kickboxing class but does not have the goal of hard contact sparring or direct Sport application. However, many of the competitors and students who participate in the traditional Muay Thai Kickboxing program also participate in the Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing class because it is an excellent workout and will, without question, improve fitness levels and will provide an opportunity for further skill development. The classes are less formal, done to music, and do not have the pressure of full contact sparring. It is a focused class with the goal of developing skills and peak fitness levels. Advancement in the program is based on a progressive 10 level system. Students advance in the curriculum based on attendance, which is the most important aspect especially within the beginning levels, skill development, and personal fitness level improvements. The advancement of the student is based on their own progress, as everyone has unique challenges and goals.


The classes are a high energy explosive workout. The training will develop cardio vascular fitness, aerobic and anaerobic,  muscular strength and muscular endurance, flexibility, burn fat, and improve energy levels. There will not be contact free sparring. We will, however, utilize: sharp shooting techniques, which are non contact, one step sparring, interactive drills and, for more advanced students, semi-free sparring. There is also a self defense component taught specifically, which includes self defense applications of Muay Thai Kickboxing and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu.


There are many goals which can be obtained in the Cardio Muay Thai Kickboxing Vancouver classes. We emphasize an effective workout utilizing Muay Thai Kickboxing techniques to get the student in the best shape they can. We also provide free nutritional counselling, upon request, and provide diet tips to teach the relationship of a healthy lifestyle and diet on mental and physical fitness levels.  As we work together in the class in a spirit of growth and progress, the goal is to make progress on many levels, get results, have fun and make friends.
