Here is a description of the philosophical concept of Mushin. Sometimes referred to as no mind,  or clear mind. However, in the emptiness the mind is full and has achieved a desired state that practitioners train to achieve.

Here is one of the better descriptions I have come across lately. Reading will enhance your study and give it more depth.

 

Mushin (無心; Japanese mushin; English translation “no mind”) is a mental state into which trained martial artists are said to enter during combat. They also practice this mental state during everyday activities. The term is shortened from mushin no shin (無心の心), a Zen expression meaning the mind without mind and is also referred to as the state of “no-mindness”. That is, a mind not fixed or occupied by thought or emotion and thus open to everything.

Mushin is achieved when a person’s mind is free from thoughts of anger, fear, or ego during combat or everyday life. There is an absence of discursive thought and judgment, so the person is totally free to act and react towards an opponent without hesitation and without disturbance from such thoughts. At this point, a person relies not on what they think should be the next move, but what is their trained natural reaction (or instinct) or what is felt intuitively. It is not a state of relaxed, near-sleepfulness, however. The mind could be said to be working at a very high speed, but with no intention, plan or direction.

Some masters believe that mushin is the state where a person finally understands the uselessness of techniques and becomes truly free to move. In fact, those people will no longer even consider themselves as “fighters” but merely living beings moving through space.

The legendary Zen master Takuan Sōhō said:

The mind must always be in the state of ‘flowing,’ for when it stops anywhere that means the flow is interrupted and it is this interruption that is injurious to the well-being of the mind. In the case of the swordsman, it means death. When the swordsman stands against his opponent, he is not to think of the opponent, nor of himself, nor of his enemy’s sword movements. He just stands there with his sword which, forgetful of all technique, is ready only to follow the dictates of the subconscious. The man has effaced himself as the wielder of the sword. When he strikes, it is not the man but the sword in the hand of the man’s subconscious that strikes.

However, mushin is not just a state of mind that can be achieved during combat. Many martial artists train to achieve this state of mind during kata so that a flawless execution of moves is accomplished — that they may be achieved during combat or at any other time. Once mushin is attained through the practice or study of martial arts (although it can be accomplished through other arts or practices that refine the mind and body), the objective is to then attain this same level of complete awareness in other aspects of the practitioner’s life.

Today we are going to explain part of the philosophical foundations of our art. For many years we have been describing our style as, ‘ A mixed martial arts style emphasizing traditional philosophy’. Sometimes these days the traditional backbone of the art gets neglected and the principle of Kaizen is an important part of the philosophy to be aware of. Other traditional philosophies will also be explained and with regular attendance and reading more will be enlightened.

This principle, which has its origin in the Japanese tradition, is central to benefiting the martial arts practitioner. It has also been applied in various business organizations to great benefit.

When we come to the dojo we should practice patience, awareness, positive attitude and work on making small improvements regularly; even if they appear slight because over time they will add up and be substantial.

Kaizen is the principle of constant and never ending improvement in our lives. It is a principle that the Samurai applied every morning they woke up by beginning the day with a specific goal of improvement in mind. At the core of Kaizen is patience which is required for improvement since you very rarely see the effects of your struggles rapidly. As a beginner it looks almost impossible to master the tasks that are required to earn your black belt and yet it is achieved one step at a time. There are no shortcuts, no simple ways to get there. As you strive to improve one thing at a time you slowly become the person with the skills to earn your black belt, under the careful and watchful eye of your Sensei. The modern warrior is always mindful of where he is at and where he is going at all times. Since our world is always changing around us our goals and targets are in constant motion and ever changing. A wise objective today may be a foolish goal tomorrow so it is always important that one re-evaluates their goals and and focus on a daily basis. Martial artists are capable of extreme concentration and focus on particular goals and targets. It is our goal/target selection that is always changing and we must be mindful of this in order to achieve success. When in your training and you reach the point that you have done your 100 front punches, you should always do one more in order to improve. Only doing the required amount will take you on a path of long training. That one extra punch, kick, kata is what makes the difference in your training and daily lives. This establishes the spirit required to achieve in today’s world as well as the world of the future. You must always do one more than needed to be a step above the other people as life is a competition. It is a competition that only you can fail. In your training your Sensei will give you the tools to achieve your black belt, but earning it is up to you. We can not push you to train outside of the dojo. We are not there watching the type of person you are becoming each step of the day. We only know what we see inside of our training halls…so it is up to you to attain greatness…to attain honor…to attain your black belt. Kaizen is the path and it is a path forged out of necessity and in time where anything less meant death.

Artin Nazari: Silver in Gi Advanced, Silver in No Gi Advanced, Ayden Arnold: Gold in Gi Advanced (Budo BJJ), Ayden’s opponent in the No Gi Advanced was injured so he didn’t get his match.. Next time. Honourable Mention to Rodean Nazari who is new to the advanced divisions and did excellently, showing good improvements but did not place. He showed great attitude and is keen to develop the skills to do well in the advanced levels. Proud of you guys. Good experience.
